Recall Memories
Below is a detailed design breakdown and the train of thought in the different parts I contributed to the game, including level design and environment modelling.
01
Level Design
Adobe Photoshop
The story took place in a wealthy family who lives in a new modern house. I coordinated the arrangements on the floor plans to make suitable level designs and puzzles inside the house.
Pencil
Adobe Illustrator
Unity
In the early planning stage, I drew the ideas down on paper and shared them with team members. This is one of the puzzles in the basement. You have to make all the buttons on the counter turn green to unlock the door to the laboratory.
Due to its suspenseful atmosphere, the game feel was another thing that took a lot of time to focus on, and we had some technological breakthroughs in shader effects. I was responsible for designing the computer screens in the laboratory and visual scripting the hologram effects. Besides, I added another outline effect on the light tubes for better performance in the game.
02
Environment Modelling
3ds Max
Substance Painter
Adobe Photoshop
As one of the environment artists on the team, I crafted a variety of 3D models for the first and second floors. I was mainly responsible for modelling and texturing the main characters' (Emily and Alice) bedrooms.
Emily(player) and Alice are twin sisters. Alice is more favoured by their parents since she is much cleverer than Emily. She likes to paint, however, her parents think that is not essential for having good grades. Gradually, Alice feels weak and depressed under the high pressure from her parents.
I tried to blend the background details into the interior design to tell the stories.
The bed in Emily's bedroom is a bottom part of a bunk bed, and Alice has the top part. Also, the painting set is placed at first sight when entering Alice's bedroom.
In contrast, there are more dresses and clothes in Alice's wardrobe.
In Alice's bedroom, there are more details about her personality. For instance, lots of certificates on the wall and a full-length mirror next to the desk. Besides, the pills and medicine bags on the desk indicated she was suffering from the disease.
I found picture references from furniture stores or the internet to model them following the actual appearance. For the word or icon details, I processed them to fit the background settings first and then textured them.
The painting on the easel was another small detail I made in the levels. The pink rabbit figure indicated Alice standing on the cliff with the waves hitting strongly, shouting her pressure quietly through the painting. Also, you can find rabbits everywhere in their bedrooms, representing Alice.
